How To Tune Your Ukulele
Another thing to learn is ukulele string numbers.
When you first get your ukulele it will have brand new strings. New strings go out of tune a lot until they are stretched. Then, they stay in tune great.
How long does it take for the strings to stretch? 2-3 days if you tune your uke every few hours, a week if you tune your uke once a day.
Most people find it hard to tune a string by just listening to a pitch and turning the peg. Lots of people love clip on digital tuners which tell you whether to tune up or down. You can get one here. (Full disclosure: we make a small commission if you buy from this link. The commission doesn’t affect the price you pay.)

Learning the F to C7 Chord Change
And here is a video lesson showing you how to play F2 to C7 to get ready for playing the F to C7 chord change.
Jingle Bells
This is a great song to use for learning to fingerpick a melody. Start with the chorus (“Jingle Bells, Jingle Bells, Jingle all the way”) because it is pretty easy. Your left hand can stay in one place (called “first position”) for the entire chorus.
Playing the verse (“Dashing through the snow”) is a lot harder because of the necessary position shifts with your left hand. Use the dots on the side of your ukulele’s fretboard to help you gauge the distances.
Another option is fingerpick only the chorus and strum and sing the verses.
We Wish You a Merry Christmas
Seven chords in this one! That’s why it’s last in the book.

Chapter 1, Song One: Reading Melodies and Tab
Are You Sleeping?
Our first video lesson is on Are You Sleeping? because it’s really easy and you probably already know the tune.
Look at which string line the number is on. Then use your left hand to stop that string in the fret that matches the number shown. Remember that 0 means an open string.
- For the first note, don’t do anything with your left hand and pluck the C-string with your right hand.
- For the second note you would stop the C string in the second fret.
- For the third note you would pluck the open E-string.
About the Video Format
As you watch the video lesson, you’ll hear the way the music should sound. You’ll also see lots of visual cues to help you link how the tab looks with how the music sounds.
The tab symbol that corresponds to the note you are hearing is circled in red in the video lesson. You’ll see Jenny fretting and plucking the string in the main frame of the video and there’s also a dot on the fretboard at the right of the screen to help you see which string and fret go with the tab symbol.
